Sunday Welcome Reception

on Sunday, August 19, 2007 from 3:00-6:00 pm at the Sutton
Place Hotel (955 Bay Street, Toronto). There will
be a cash bar at this event.
For Faculty of Forestry Alumni, Faculty & Staff, we hope
that you will continue on to participate in the Centennial
Homecoming Banquet Reception, following the Forests
in Settled Landscapes Conference Welcome Reception.

The Canadian Institute of Forestry-Institut forestier
du Canada (CIF/IFC) presents national awards to individuals
and groups on an annual basis. On Monday, August 20, 2007,
the CIF/IFC will hold its Annual Awards Banquet at the
University of Toronto, in conjunction with the Forests
in Settled Landscapes Conference. The Banquet will provide
an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of CIF/IFC
members during a gala awards ceremony and luncheon. The
eight awards presented to individuals and organizations
are intended to recognize their valuable contributions
to the forestry sector and towards the practice of sustainable
forest management.

BBQ at Drysdale's Tree Farm
Tuesday Evening ($45/person - FREE if you register for the FULL
conference)

Join us for a BBQ steak dinner and an evening of entertainment
at Drysdale's
Tree Farm!
Buses will depart from the University of Toronto after
sessions have ended for the day. We will travel north
of Toronto to Drysdale's Tree Farm in Egbert, just south
of Barrie (approx travel time will be 1.5 hours). Buses
will return to Toronto later in the evening, making stops
at 89 Chestnut Hotel Residence, as well as New College
Residence on the UofT campus.
This evening outing is INCLUDED in the registration fee
for all those who register for a full conference pass.
Tickets for the outing may be purchased separately for
spouses/guests and for those who register for single-day
passes ($45/person). Alcoholic beverages are not included;
however, a cash bar will be available at the event.

Tall Ship Kajama Harbourfront Dinner Cruise
Wednesday Evening ($75/person)

Join
us as we set sail aboard the Tall Ship Kajama, as seen
on the Amazing Race!
Launched as the Wilfried in Rendsburg,
Germany in 1930, the Kajama traded under sail for nearly
70 years. She was a familiar ship in ports from Northwest
Spain, through western Europe, and as far north as Norway
and Russia. In 1999, Kajama was delivered transatlantic
by Great Lakes Schooner Company and restored to her original
profile.

We will set sail aboard this 164-foot tall, three-masted
gaff-rigged schooner for a tour of Toronto harbour with
spectacular views of the skyline. The 4-hour cruise will
include a hot dinner and entertainment.
This outing is NOT included in your registration
fee. Tickets are $75/person. Please note that alcoholic
beverages are not included; however, a cash bar will be
available on board. This event will take place rain or
shine. There is enough indoor seating for everyone, should
we encounter inclement weather.

Field Trip #1: Urban Forestry Tour
Thursday ($35/person)
Space is limited to the first 50 registrants

The urban forestry tour will begin in the Town of Oakville,
the Forest Capital of Canada for 2007. During this excursion,
participants will visit one of Oakville’s FSC certified
urban woodlots. At other sites, new technologies for the
enhancement of tree habitat will be examined including the
use of structural soil, radial trenching and air spading.
The Region of Halton recently recommended the expenditure
of $343,000 to redesign a road widening to protect an historic
White Oak tree. |
The tour will visit the site and the application of the
Ontario Heritage Tree Alliance’s Heritage Tree Toolkit to
this specimen will be reviewed. A number of other stops
within the environs of the Town of Oakville and the Region
of Halton are currently being developed including sites
demonstrating the impact of urban design on canopy cover. |
Field Trip #2: Rural Woodlot and Landscape Management Tour
Thursday ($35/person)

The Rural Woodlot
and Landscape Management Tour will consist of a day-long
tour north of Toronto to visit and hear about the expanding
population growth into example rural counties of Southern
Ontario and to discuss what impacts and mitigative solutions
are being tried to cope. |

Delegates will hear from Woodlot owners, Stewardship Coordinators,
Conservation Authority Managers, the local Logger's Association,
County Foresters etc, to get an overall picture of the
emerging settled landscape of the area and of the kind
of future vision of the landscape property owners and
land managers are predicting. Stops will include Somerville
Nurseries near Alliston and Springwater Provincial Park.
The tour is being supported financially in part by the
North Simcoe Private Land Stewardship Network.
